The official Kaiju No. 8 account posted the first promotional video for Kaiju No. 8: Narumi's Week at Work on August 5, and the trailer carries the news fans were waiting for. The original short anime premieres on September 5 and runs for four episodes.

According to the announcement, episodes arrive every Saturday at 8:00 p.m. JST on the TOHO animation YouTube channel. The series' English language account confirmed the same September 5 start for viewers outside Japan, where all four episodes stream weekly on Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll echoed the plan in its own post, describing a captain who "just wants a peaceful, relaxing, compliment-filled week of work." Anime News Network reports the run closes on September 26.

What the short is about

Where the main series follows Kafka Hibino and the Third Division, this spin-off narrows its focus to one man. Gen Narumi, the First Division captain billed as Japan's strongest anti-kaiju combatant, is the lead, and the joke is the gap between his reputation and his working habits. Anime News Network describes a character who skips meetings, avoids paperwork, and plays games in his downtime, then still runs into trouble he has to fight his way out of.

That premise is the piece of Narumi the television anime only glanced at. The trailer leans into it, cutting between deadpan office comedy and the moments where the strongest captain has to act like it.

Who is making it

The short keeps the television anime's core team. Anime News Network credits Shigeyuki Miya as director, Tetsuya Nishio as character designer and chief animation director, and Yuta Bandoh as composer, with Production I.G animating. Hayato Aragaki, the 3D director on the second television season and on the earlier Hoshina side story, returns in the same role, and Yuka Yamajo edits.
