Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Youkai Bake-shon Opens to 440,000 Admissions and ¥530 Million in Three Days

A series best start in theaters

Crayon Shin-chan: Kikikaikai! Ora no Youkai Bake-shon has opened to the biggest three days in the film series' history. The movie's official account announced on August 3 that it drew 440,000 admissions and grossed more than ¥530 million between July 31 and August 2, its first weekend in Japanese theaters.

The accompanying announcement on V-STORAGE, the official news site run by Bandai Namco Filmworks, puts that run across 370 screens. MANTANWEB reports the three day admission total is the strongest opening the series has recorded, landing at roughly 120 percent of the opening for 2024's Ora-tachi no Kyouryuu Nikki, which is the franchise's highest grossing entry to date. Distributor Toho said the start raises expectations that the new film could pass the series' all time box office record.

What the film is

The story sends Shinnosuke and the rest of the Nohara family to Akita, Hiroshi's home prefecture, to see the Omagari fireworks display. The trip goes sideways and the family lands in the world of yokai instead. Masaki Watanabe directed the film from a screenplay by Yoshiko Nakamura, with Toho distributing and TOMOO performing the theme song "Otona ni Nattara".

It is the newest theatrical entry in a franchise our catalog dates back to April 1992, when the Crayon Shin-chan television series began. The films have been an annual summer fixture for most of that run, which is part of why an opening measured against the previous record holder carries weight here: the series competes mostly with itself.

The special video

Alongside the box office update, the official site released a special video built around footage shown for the first time. V-STORAGE describes it as revealing Yako shifting out of human form into a nine tailed fox, plus scenes of Pinkko, Shiro, Karazou and the Nohara family inside the yokai realm. The clip also cuts in audience reactions recorded in theaters, with crowds calling back the film's catchphrase, a pun that reads as both "is something the matter?" and "something yokai?"
