Sekiro: No Defeat Sets September 4 Theatrical Release With a New Trailer

The official account for Sekiro: No Defeat released a theatrical trailer on June 26, premiering it on YouTube and confirming that the film will open in Japanese cinemas on September 4, 2026. The production says the theatrical run will be a limited three week engagement. The anime adapts FromSoftware's action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the new footage leans into the bond at the heart of the story: the silent shinobi Sekiro and the young Divine Heir he is sworn to protect, Kuro. The official tagline for the trailer reads "together, to live and to die."

What the film is about

Our catalog frames the story in the Sengoku era, in a fractured Japan worn down by ceaseless war. At its center is Ashina, a land reclaimed two decades earlier by the Sword Saint Isshin Ashina. A fresh threat rises from within when his grandson Genichiro Ashina turns to forbidden powers to defend his homeland. The hope of restoring balance rests on a kidnapped boy, the Divine Heir, and the loyal retainer who guards him. Billed as a single feature, the film is described by the production as a poignant and beautiful tale of a lord and his retainer.

Studio, staff and a note on AI

Multiple outlets report that the film is produced by studio Qzil.la alongside ARCH, under Kadokawa and Crunchyroll. Anime News Network lists Kenichi Kutsuna as director, Takuya Satou as screenwriter, Takahiro Kishida as character designer, and Shuta Hasunuma as composer, with a theme song titled "Blu" drawn from the work of Ryuichi Sakamoto. Because Qzil.la has been associated with various AI projects, some fans assumed the film would rely on generative AI. The production committee has stated that it will not, confirming the film uses traditional hand drawn 2D animation.

Where and when to watch

Ahead of the wider trailer rollout, the film screened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, where it was selected for the Midnight Specials section. After the Japanese theatrical window, Crunchyroll will stream Sekiro: No Defeat worldwide in 2026, with the company noting the release excludes Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus. Advance movie tickets are already on sale through the official site. No streaming dates beyond the 2026 window have been announced, so fans outside Japan will want to watch for Crunchyroll's scheduling later in the year.
