Gen Urobuchi Is Writing the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime
Nitroplus says its own Gen Urobuchi will handle series composition and script, with Satoshi Maejima joining on screenplay.

Nitroplus brings its signature writers to Tsushima
Nitroplus announced on July 6 that Gen Urobuchi will handle series composition and screenplay for the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime (冥人奇譚), joined by fellow Nitroplus writer Satoshi Maejima on script. The studio shared the news through its official account and its news page, adding two of its best known names to a project that Crunchyroll had only just unveiled.
What was announced
According to Nitroplus, Urobuchi takes the lead writing role, credited with series composition and script, while Maejima shares screenplay duties. The reveal follows the anime's debut at Anime Expo 2026, where the first character visuals were shown. Outlets covering the panel, including Anime News Network, report that the series is set for a 2027 release on Crunchyroll.
The production credits listed by Nitroplus name Takanobu Mizuno as director and Takashi Okazaki, the artist behind Afro Samurai, on character design. Kamikaze Douga is handling the animation, with HAYATE overseeing production. Reporting from the Anime Expo panel adds Aniplex as a collaborator on the series.
The source material
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends adapts the cooperative multiplayer mode of Sony's Ghost of Tsushima, the samurai action game set during the 1274 Mongol invasion of Tsushima. Where the main game follows the warrior Jin Sakai, the Legends mode leans into Japanese folklore, casting players as archetypes such as the Ronin, Hunter, and Assassin. Nitroplus frames the anime around a figure it calls a kuroudo (冥人), described as one returned from the underworld to drive back Kublai Khan's invading forces. Crunchyroll unveiled visuals for the Ronin, Hunter, and Assassin, along with a group visual, at the convention.
Why it matters
Urobuchi is among the most recognizable writers in anime, credited on works reported to include Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Pairing that voice with Kamikaze Douga, the studio known for stylized action in projects such as Batman Ninja and its JoJo's Bizarre Adventure opening sequences, points to a distinctive tone for a game adaptation. A character designer with Okazaki's pedigree reinforces that direction.
For now, several details remain open. Beyond the reported 2027 Crunchyroll window, no firm premiere date has been announced, and Nitroplus has not detailed the voice cast. What is confirmed is the creative core: a Nitroplus writing team led by Urobuchi, a Kamikaze Douga production, and a story pulled from one of the PlayStation era's most celebrated samurai games.
