At a glance. We built Anime.com so anime fans can track shows, post reviews, build lists, talk in communities, and find each other. To make that work, we collect the data you provide (account info, posts, images, messages) and the data your device sends automatically (device info, usage events, crash logs).
What we don’t do: We don’t sell your personal information for money, and we don’t show third-party ads inside the Service. We do use limited information to measure Anime.com ads that run on other services. Those practices are described below.
1. Who This Policy Applies To
This Privacy Notice applies to your use of Anime.com — including our website at anime.com, our iOS and Android apps, and any other services we operate under the Anime.com brand (collectively, “Anime.com” or “the Service”).
This policy is published by Anime.com Inc. (“we,” “our,” or “us”).

3. Information We Collect
3A. Information You Provide Directly
Category:Account information
What it includes:Email address, username, display name, self-declared birthdate, profile photo (if you upload one), and the verification code we send to your email for sign-in.
Category:Profile information
What it includes:Bio, anime preferences, region, and other details you add to your profile.
Category:User-generated content
What it includes:Posts, reviews, ratings, comments, tier lists, grids, polls, and any other content you create on the Service.
Category:Photos and images
What it includes:When you add an image to a post, review, profile, or grid, we collect and store that image. Image uploads pass through automated content moderation (text and visual) before they’re published.
Category:Direct messages
What it includes:The content of messages you send to other users. Messages are visible only to participants in the conversation. Direct messages are processed by automated content moderation to detect policy violations, but are not otherwise shared with third parties or used to train AI models.

What it includes:Emails, support tickets, survey responses, and any other messages you send us.

What it includes:When you sign in with an email one-time code, we receive your email address and the code you submit.
3B. Information Collected Automatically
Category:Device and connection data
What it includes:Device model, OS version, app version, IP address, device language, time zone, and app, session, or analytics identifiers used for authentication, security, push delivery, and analytics.

What it includes:A pseudonymous account identifier we assign to you when you create an account, separate from your username.
Category:Usage and interaction data
What it includes:Pages and screens you view, taps and clicks, content you interact with (likes, ratings, follows, comments), session duration, referral source.
Category:Search history
What it includes:Queries you enter into in-app search, which are processed by our servers to return results and may be recorded in our analytics and diagnostic logs. Your list of recent searches is stored on your local device.
Category:Push notification interactions
What it includes:If you grant permission, we collect data about which notifications you receive and whether you open them, to tune frequency, relevance, and timing.

What it includes:Crash reports, error logs, performance metrics (app load time, request latency, error rates), and the device context required to debug issues.
Category:Cookies and similar technologies
What it includes:On the website, we use cookies for authentication, preferences, analytics, and advertising measurement. See Section 14. The native apps do not use browser cookies; they use equivalent on-device storage for app functionality, analytics, and attribution.

What it includes:Referral and campaign information; Meta click and browser identifiers when present on the website; IP address and user agent for server-side website conversion events; and native-app install and app-activation events. On iOS, we use Apple’s aggregate attribution for campaign reporting without requesting permission to access the advertising identifier. Advertiser-identifier collection is disabled in our native Meta SDK configuration.

4. How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Operate the Service — authenticate you, deliver content you’ve subscribed to, send messages between users, store your posts and lists.
- Personalize your experience — surface anime recommendations, feature relevant communities, tune your home feed.
- Improve the Service — measure feature usage, identify bugs, analyze performance, run product experiments.
- Measure our advertising — attribute website activity, app installations, and selected conversion events to Anime.com ad campaigns; compare campaign performance; and control ad spend.
- Protect the Service and our community — moderate content, detect abuse, prevent fraud, enforce our Community Guidelines, and respond to legal requests.
- Communicate with you — send service announcements, respond to support requests, and (with your consent) send marketing emails. You can opt out of marketing emails at any time via the unsubscribe link.
- Comply with the law — meet our legal obligations, respond to lawful requests, and protect our rights.
5. User-Generated Content
Anime.com is a social platform where you create and share content. This section explains how we handle that content.
Public vs. private. Posts, reviews, comments, tier lists, grids, watchlists, guides, profile information, and uploaded images are public — visible to other users of Anime.com. Direct messages are visible only to the participants in the conversation.
License to display your content. By posting content to Anime.com, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, display, and distribute that content within the Service for the purpose of operating it. Full license terms are in our Terms of Service.
Moderation. We use automated moderation on supported text and image submission types and supplement it with human review of reported content. Content that violates our Community Guidelines may be removed, and accounts may be suspended or banned.
Reporting and blocking. You can report posts, reviews, comments, direct messages, uploaded images, and user profiles using the Report action available on the relevant content or profile surface. You can block users from supported profile and messaging surfaces. We prioritize reports based on severity and safety risk.
Retention. Content you post remains on the Service until you delete it or your account. When you delete your account, your content is removed or anonymized within 30 days, except where retention is required by law, for safety investigations, or for fraud prevention.
6. Third-Party Service Providers
We use the following third-party services to operate Anime.com and measure our advertising. Depending on the service and purpose, a provider may process information on our behalf or receive information under its business terms. We do not exchange personal information with these providers for monetary payment.

We do not send custom native-app conversion events or Anime.com account fields through this integration, and advertiser-identifier collection is disabled in our native SDK configuration.
We may add, remove, or replace service providers from time to time. We update this list when material changes occur.
7. How We Share Information
We share personal information only in the following circumstances:
- With service providers listed in Section 6, for the purposes described.
- With other users, when you post public content. Your username, display name, profile photo, posts, reviews, and other public contributions are visible to other users.
- In direct messages, with the recipients you choose.
- For legal reasons, when required by valid legal process, government request, or to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
- In a business transaction, such as a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, in which case we will notify you and provide choices where applicable.
- With your consent, in any other circumstance where you direct us to share.
- With advertising measurement partners, to attribute Anime.com ads and selected conversion events as described in Sections 3, 4, and 6.
We do not sell personal information for monetary consideration. Some laws may define disclosures to advertising platforms for measurement or attribution as “sharing,” “sale,” or targeted advertising even when no money is exchanged for the information.
8. Retention
We retain personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law.

Retention period:When you delete content, it is hidden from the Service. When you delete your account, your content is anonymized within 30 days. Residual copies may persist in encrypted database backups, which are automatically deleted on a rolling 30-day basis.

Retention period:Until you delete your comment or your account. Deleted comments leave a “[deleted]” placeholder, with the text and images removed.

Retention period:Until you delete them. Deleting a message removes it for all participants in the conversation. If you delete your account, your messages are anonymized and shown as from a “deleted user.”

Retention period:Your list of recent searches is stored on your local device. Search queries are processed by our servers to return results and may appear in our analytics and diagnostic logs (see the analytics and diagnostic rows below).

When you delete your account, identifiable personal information is removed or anonymized within 30 days. Some data may be retained longer where required by law, for fraud prevention, for safety investigations, or in aggregated and anonymized form for analytics and research.

9B. EU / UK / EEA — GDPR
If you’re in the EU, UK, EEA, or Switzerland, the General Data Protection Regulation (and its UK equivalent) applies.
Our legal bases for processing:
- Contract performance — providing the Service you signed up for
- Legitimate interests — operating, securing, and improving the Service, balanced against your rights
- Consent — for marketing emails and any optional data processing where consent is required
- Legal obligation — complying with applicable law
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority if you believe we’ve handled your data improperly.
9C. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, and Other US States
If you’re a resident of a US state with a comprehensive privacy law, you have additional rights:
- Right to know what personal information we collect, use, and share
- Right to delete personal information
- Right to correct inaccurate information
- Right to portability — receive your data in a portable format
- Right to opt out of “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising these rights
We do not sell personal information for monetary consideration. Depending on where you live, our advertising measurement disclosures may be considered “sharing,” “sale,” or targeted advertising under applicable law. You may request to opt out by emailing support@anime.com.
To exercise your rights, email support@anime.com. We may need to verify your identity before processing the request. Authorized agents may submit requests on behalf of California residents with written authorization.
9D. Other Jurisdictions
If you’re in a jurisdiction not covered above (Japan, Brazil, Canada, Australia, and others), you may have additional rights under your local law. Email support@anime.com and we will assist you in exercising applicable rights.
10. International Data Transfers
Anime.com is operated by Anime.com Inc. and hosted on infrastructure that may be located in the United States, the European Union, and other regions. By using the Service, your data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence, which may have different data-protection laws.
For transfers from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland to countries that have not been recognized as providing adequate protection, we rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (and equivalent UK and Swiss mechanisms) with our service providers and group entities.
11. Children’s Privacy
Anime.com is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We take steps to prevent such collection, including through age screening at account registration. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will promptly delete that user’s account and all associated personal information. In the event that we inadvertently collect personal information from a child under 13, we will retain such information only as long as reasonably necessary to identify and delete it, and in no event indefinitely.
We do not knowingly sell or share (as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended) the personal information of users we know to be under 16 years of age. Where we have actual knowledge that a user is under 13 years of age, we will promptly delete that user’s account and all associated personal information.
We use the self-declared birthdate supplied during registration to enforce our minimum account age. Anime.com does not request precise geolocation permission in its native apps.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child is under 13 and has created an account on the Service, please contact us at support@anime.com. We will promptly delete the account and all associated personal information.
12. Push Notifications
If you enable push notifications on the iOS app, Android app, or web, we send you notifications about activity relevant to you (new episodes for shows you track, replies to your posts, new followers, messages, and similar events).
We collect data about which notifications we send you, whether you open them, and your engagement, to tune notification frequency and relevance. You can disable push notifications at any time in your device settings or in Settings → Notifications within the app.
13. Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect personal information — including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest where applicable, access controls, audit logging, and vendor due diligence.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If you believe your account has been compromised or you’ve discovered a security vulnerability, email security@anime.com.
14. Cookies and Similar Technologies
On the website, we use:
- Strictly necessary cookies — required for authentication, session management, and core functionality. These cannot be disabled.
- Functional cookies — remember your preferences (theme, language, region).
- Analytics cookies — measure usage and improve the Service. Set by PostHog and other analytics providers in Section 6.
- Advertising measurement cookies and identifiers — when present, Meta click and browser identifiers help connect a visit or conversion to an Anime.com advertising campaign.
The native apps do not use browser cookies. They use equivalent on-device storage, such as Keychain, UserDefaults, SharedPreferences, and file storage, for app functionality, analytics, and attribution.
You can manage cookies in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent the Service from working.
15. Intellectual Property and Third-Party Content
Your content remains yours. By posting it, you grant us the license described in Section 5 to display it on the Service. Full terms are in our Terms of Service.
Anime metadata — show titles, cover art, episode descriptions, character imagery, and related content — is licensed from third-party providers or used under fair-use principles.
16. Other Websites and Services
Anime.com may link to or integrate with third-party websites and services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those services. Review their privacy notices before providing them with personal information.
17. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes — such as collecting new categories of data, adding significant new processing purposes, or changing how we share data — we will:
- Update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy
- Add a row to the Summary of Changes table
- Notify you in the app and (where required by law) by email at least 30 days before the changes take effect
Minor edits (clarifications, typo fixes, structural changes) may be made without notice.
