Whoever Steals This Book Anime Film Sets October 28 Blu-ray and DVD Release

What was announced

The official website and X account for Whoever Steals This Book have confirmed a home video release for the anime film. The Blu-ray and DVD go on sale in Japan on October 28.

According to the official site, the release is dressed up for collectors. It ships in a newly drawn outer case illustrated by character designer Keiko Kurosawa, and it includes a special booklet that re-edits the movie's theatrical pamphlet. Individual retailers will carry their own store exclusive bonuses on top of that, so where fans pre-order will change what extras they take home.

What the film is

Whoever Steals This Book is a fantasy mystery adapted from the novel by Nowaki Fukamidori. It follows Mifuyu, a high school student who lives surrounded by the enormous book collection of Mikura Hall, a library left behind by her great grandfather. Mifuyu does not share her family's love of reading, but when several volumes are stolen from the collection they trigger an ancient curse that remakes the town in the shape of the stolen stories. To break it, she has to catch the thief, traveling through those story worlds alongside a mysterious girl named Mashiro.

The movie was directed by Daisei Fukuoka at studio Kagokan, with a screenplay by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, character designs and animation direction by Keiko Kurosawa, and a score by Michiru Oshima, according to Anime News Network. Kadokawa handled the film's distribution, and it opened in Japanese theaters on December 26, 2025. The home video release lands roughly ten months after that debut.

Coming to North America

Overseas fans have a reason to keep an eye on the title too. Crunchyroll has licensed Whoever Steals This Book for North America, so the October 28 Blu-ray and DVD gives the film a physical release in Japan as it continues to expand internationally. A North American home video date has not been announced.
