The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 5 Sets 2027 Premiere With Its First Trailer
Crunchyroll debuted the first trailer and a new visual for Shield Hero Season 5 at Anime Expo 2026, confirming a 2027 release window.
Shield Hero returns for a fifth season in 2027
Crunchyroll used its Anime Expo 2026 showcase to debut the first trailer for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 5, confirming that the isekai series will return in 2027. The reveal, made during Crunchyroll's panel at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, paired the trailer with a new key visual, though a specific release date has not been set.
Season 5 itself was confirmed back in September 2025, on the same night the fourth season aired its finale. That makes the Anime Expo footage the franchise's first real look at what comes next rather than a fresh announcement.
What was shown
The new trailer offers an early glimpse at the coming episodes and arrives with a matching visual. Crunchyroll has set the series for a 2027 window on its platform, but has not narrowed it to a season or month, and no new staff or cast were revealed alongside the footage.
Where the story stands
The series follows Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary young man summoned to another world as the Shield Hero, one of four Cardinal Heroes tasked with defending it. After being betrayed and cast out early on, Naofumi rebuilds his standing alongside a loyal party that grows to include Raphtalia and Filo.
The anime, based on the light novels by Aneko Yusagi, began in 2019 with a 25 episode first season animated by Kinema Citrus. It has continued at a steady pace since, with a second season in 2022, a third in 2023, and a fourth that premiered in July 2025, setting up the jump to a fifth entry.
Why it matters
Shield Hero has been one of Crunchyroll's more durable isekai franchises, and a fifth season keeps one of the platform's longest running adaptations moving. With only a 2027 window on the table, the first trailer is the clearest sign yet that Naofumi's story is far from over.
