A new television adaptation of The Ghost in the Shell from studio Science SARU premieres on July 7, 2026, the project's official accounts have confirmed, with Prime Video streaming the series globally the same night.
A new take on a cyberpunk landmark
According to Anime News Network and Science SARU, the series is produced by Science SARU, the studio behind Dandadan and Devilman Crybaby, and is based on Masamune Shirow's 1989 to 1991 manga, in a production committee with Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha and Production I.G. It is the first new Ghost in the Shell television anime since Netflix's SAC_2045 concluded in 2022.
Story
Per Science SARU, the story follows the full-body cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi and the counter-cybercrime unit she leads, with Daisuke Aramaki of the Ministry of Internal Affairs recruiting her team. Ahead of the premiere, the official account has been sharing character moments featuring Motoko and Batou.
Staff
According to Anime News Network, Mokochan makes his directorial debut on the series, with Toh Enjoe writing and overseeing the scripts, Shuhei Handa on character designs and chief animation direction, and Taisei Iwasaki serving as music director. The title logo is designed by Hajime Sorayama, and the ending theme, titled Blue, is performed by Millennium Parade featuring Saya Gray and Daniel Caesar.
When and where to watch
In Japan, the series airs July 7 on Kantele and Fuji TV's Tuesday 11 pm block, with Prime Video streaming it domestically at 11:30 pm, just after broadcast, per the official accounts. According to Anime News Network, Prime Video will stream the anime in more than 240 countries and territories, excluding Japan and Vietnam, with eight dub languages at launch, and the first two episodes screened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival ahead of the global premiere.
