Your Name Returns to North American Theaters in 4K for Its 10th Anniversary

GKIDS unveiled fresh key art for the release at its Anime Expo 2026 industry panel, and ticket sales are expected to be announced later this month.

Your Name. first opened in Japan on August 26, 2016, so the theatrical return lands almost exactly ten years after its debut. GKIDS, the film's North American distributor, is building the re-release around a 4K remaster, giving longtime fans a reason to revisit the film in a theater and offering newer viewers a first chance to see it the way it was meant to be experienced. According to reporting on the announcement, the film went on to become one of the highest-grossing Japanese animated films of all time, taking in roughly $400 million worldwide during its original run and cementing Shinkai's place among the most influential filmmakers in modern anime.

For anyone coming to it fresh, the award-winning drama follows two high schoolers, Mitsuha and Taki, who are complete strangers living separate lives until they inexplicably begin swapping bodies. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki's body and he in hers, and the two must adjust their lives around each other as the strange phenomenon keeps recurring. That body-swap premise gradually opens into something far more emotional, paired with the painterly backgrounds and precise, wistful tone that became Shinkai's signature.

Beyond the theaters

The anniversary push does not stop at the box office. GKIDS is also preparing new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook and Blu-ray editions of the film, set to arrive on August 25, 2026 and already open for pre-order, with physical distribution handled by Shout! Studios. Reporting around the announcement also pointed to a busy stretch for the director's camp, noting a new CoMix Wave Films short on the way and word that Shinkai is at work on his next feature. Between the theatrical run and the home-video release, the back half of August is shaping up to be a notable stretch for Shinkai fans revisiting the film that helped define a generation of anime cinema.
