Penguindrum Marks Its 15th Anniversary With Free Streaming and a Re:cycle Film Re-Screening
The official account is putting the full 2011 series on YouTube for free from July 17 and preparing a theatrical revival of the Re:cycle films.

What was announced
The official Penguindrum account marked the 15th anniversary of Kunihiko Ikuhara's surreal 2011 series on July 7 with a newly drawn commemorative illustration and a slate of anniversary plans. The artwork was created by character designer Lily Hoshino and gathers the three Takakura siblings, their penguin companions, and the Princess of the Crystal into a single celebratory frame. The account framed the plans as a thank-you to fans who have followed the show across the decade and a half since it first aired.
Free streaming for a limited time
The headline for fans is a limited-time free run of the full television series. According to the official account, every episode of Penguindrum will stream free on YouTube beginning July 17, released across four separate batches over the course of the campaign. The series first aired in 2011 and ran for 24 episodes, so the staggered four-batch rollout gives newcomers a clear window to watch the entire story from the beginning at no cost, and gives returning fans an easy way to revisit it ahead of the anniversary. No end date for the free window was given beyond its limited-time framing, and the account pointed viewers to the official site for the full schedule of release dates.
A Re:cycle film re-screening is in the works
The team also confirmed that a theatrical re-screening of the two-part film Re:cycle of the Penguindrum is being prepared. Both the first and second parts are planned for the revival. The account stopped short of confirming theaters or dates, saying only that further details will follow, so fans hoping to see the films on the big screen again should watch the official channels for the lineup.
Background
Directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, Penguindrum follows Himari Takakura, a terminally ill girl who is saved from death by a spirit that resides in a penguin-shaped hat. In exchange for extending her life, the spirit orders her brothers, Kanba and Shoma, to track down a mysterious item called the Penguindrum, with help from a trio of eccentric penguins. The show pairs avant-garde visuals with drama, mystery, and supernatural threads, and it remains one of the most discussed anime of its era. In 2022, the story was retold and expanded as the film duology Re:cycle of the Penguindrum, the same set of movies now lined up for the anniversary revival. Between the free streaming run and the planned film return, the anniversary gives both longtime viewers and first-timers a reason to step back into the world of the Penguindrum this summer.
