GKIDS Unveils 4K Collector's Editions for Look Back and Angel's Egg at Anime Expo 2026
The distributor's Anime Expo panel revealed GKIDS Store exclusive home video sets for four films, headlined by a new 4K restoration of Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg.

What GKIDS announced
At its Anime Expo 2026 panel on Sunday, GKIDS revealed four new home video releases as GKIDS Store exclusives, each a collector focused edition built around restorations, bonus features, and premium packaging. The lineup pairs two landmark anime titles with two acclaimed Japanese live action films, and all four opened for pre-order at the GKIDS Store alongside the announcement. GKIDS framed the sets as archival efforts, with the company's home entertainment team describing a goal of preserving these works through thoughtfully curated, enduring releases rather than standard retail editions.
The anime releases
Leading the anime side is Look Back, the 2024 film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's one shot manga, which GKIDS will issue as a 4K UHD Collector's Edition on September 8. The story follows Fujino, a class newspaper cartoonist whose rivalry with the reclusive, gifted Kyomoto slowly turns into a shared devotion to drawing, and the film earned wide acclaim for translating Fujimoto's tribute to making art onto the screen.
The bigger restoration news is Angel's Egg, Mamoru Oshii's 1985 work, which returns in an all new 4K restoration overseen by Oshii himself and drawn from a fresh scan of a 35mm film negative. GKIDS lists the Collector's Edition as a pre-order set to ship on September 22, 2026. Oshii conceived the film with artist Yoshitaka Amano, who also handled its art direction, and its dreamlike tale of a young girl guarding a mysterious egg in a ruined city has sustained a devoted following for four decades.
The live action side
GKIDS is also reaching beyond animation with this set. Hideaki Anno's 1998 drama Love & Pop, the Evangelion director's first feature outside anime, gets its first ever Blu-ray on October 6. Rounding out the collection is the 2005 music film Linda Linda Linda, which GKIDS is bringing to 4K Ultra HD with a ship date of September 9, 2026.
Why it matters
The releases continue GKIDS's steady push into premium physical media for both classic and contemporary Japanese cinema, a lane the distributor has leaned into across a string of recent collector editions and restorations. For Angel's Egg in particular, a 4K restoration supervised by its director gives one of the medium's most singular art films its most complete home video presentation to date, and pairing it with a modern favorite like Look Back underlines how far GKIDS is casting its net for collectors. With ship dates spread across September and October, the four editions give fans a full fall of releases to plan around, and they signal that GKIDS intends to keep treating catalog restoration as a core part of its business rather than an occasional experiment.
