Evangelion 2.0: You Can (not) Advance (blu-ray)
Evangelion 2.0: You Can (not) Advance
Anime Review by John Martone

EvangelionJust when you thought it was safe to say things make sense, another Evangelion movie comes out. Known for being head scratchingly odd, complex, and (we believe) brilliant, movie two (of four) picks up right where 1.0: You Are (not) Alone leaves off.

Yet, whereas 1.0 was mostly introductory, and reintroduced viewers to a world they already knew, 2.0 punches audiences and reminds them they don't know jack about what's going on. If we need a stronger allegory, 1.0 is a scalpel, making slight incisions into the plot, in order to show us the hidden insight. This is contrasted by the sledgehammer of 2.0, which shatters the pinata, raining down candy on us gleeful children. Read More...

Sacred Blacksmith
Sacred Blacksmith
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Sacred BlacksmithThe river in Egypt. Da' Nile. And that's what Cecily is in... Denial. She keeps saying Luke's not her boyfriend, but everyone else seems to think otherwise. I mean, she keeps showing up at his house, begging for him ... to make her a sword.

She's your typical red-haired warrior, defending the city of Housman with her sword, short skirt, and a decent sized chest (which everyone seems obsessed with, much to her consternation). Read More...

Maria Holic
Maria Holic
Anime Review by John Martone

Maria HolicComedy is a hard beast to master. Undeniably, surprise is one of the central pillars of the art form. Timing, yes, but to elicit true responses from your audience, they must (at least initially) not expect what is going to happen. This can be done a number of ways, but the one we want to discuss today is shock value.

Absurdity meets offensiveness as Maria Holic is, essentially, the story of a lesbian with a physical allergy to men, and the cross dressing sadist who emotionally terrorizes her. It's immediately plain to see that this is not your typical comedy, and the absurdity of it all keeps the viewer more of a spectator than a participator. Read More...

Chrono Crusade
Chrono Crusade
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Chrono CrusadeFor some reason I keep confusing this with Sega's Chrono Trigger RPG series.
Doesn't Square-Enix simply own the whole "Chrono" franchise? Maybe this is related?

It's the roaring 20's in New York City (half of the fun is watching how the Japanese interpret NYC; and as a native, I can say they get a lot wrong), and Sister Rosette Christopher and her partner Chrono may be the best exorcists in the Order of Magdalene, but hold on to your rosary as these two professional exorcists rage against depravity in this iconic series from the creators of Afro Samurai and Trinity Blood. Gundam Zero Custom Model Kit

Gundam Zero Custom Model Kit
Having been around for a few eons Mobile Suit Gundam is a beloved anime classic. This kit captures a bit of that magic — it has a nice amount of detail but is pretty easy to put together. Added to that it comes with two torsos so you can pose it in multiple ways.

Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE Character Guide
Tsubasa Character Guide
Anime Book Review by Brian Cirulnick

TsubasaTsubasa is hard to describe, because it's kind of like "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in that it attempts to tie together the entire line of CLAMP universes into one cohesive whole.

However, this makes it an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to embrace the characters and concepts of CLAMP lore, as just about everyone is represented at some point in the series.

Manga Guide Review by Brian Cirulnick

Manga Guide to Calculus I admit I never did that well in High School. I suffered through algebra, and never figured out trigonometry. And this is why I found the Manga Guide to Calculus an amazing and enlightening read.

What this book does better than any calculus book I have ever seen is give a context to the processes and concepts. Read More...
